How would you like a 102 inch plasma television like Samsung displayed in the CES show in Las Vegas 2005? You might rather have the more recent Panasonic with a 150 inch screen! In either case, you will be set back $80k or so to purchase these large sets. I am unsure if you could even find one to purchase. Recently, I saw 103 inch Panasonic professional series plasma for 69k. Price Break and Plasma Screen Size For the majority of people 42 inches and less is adequate. This is where the price break point currently is. If you go up to 50 inches, or more, you will pay a lot more. You can buy a 42 inch plasma for under $2k. Whereas, a 65 inch plasma television will cost you around 7-8k. The other factor is room size. It isn’t the best seating to sit in a movie theater on the front row. The same concept applies to your home. A giant television isn’t going to make sense unless you have a large enough viewing distance. Most rooms, in a home, will work very well with a 32-42 inch screen. Brands Compared to CRT all plasma televisions work great. However, Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic are the leaders. When you go to the store look carefully at the peoples faces because it is here that you will see the brand differences. Look for color blending and brightness. When I went to Costco, my eye totally favored the Sony and Samsung models. Take the time to really look at the item without looking first at price. Overall Price The overall price of plasma television sets is quite reasonable. They have the majority of the market share because they have always been less expensive over LCD. In addition, LCD was a later developing technology. LCD isn’t likely to take over plasma in popularity unless the LCD price comes down. Fortunately, for consumers, the prices are coming closer and closer together. If you want the largest screen for the money, plasma is the only way to go. | |||
