Austrian botanist, Friedrich first observed liquid crystals in 1888. At the time, the world was not interested in the properties of liquid crystals. Friedrich observed that certain matter when heated up can have the properties of a solid and a liquid. Hence, the name, liquid crystal was born. Around 1961 a scientist name Heilmeier (from Germany), under a grant from RCA, and while at Princeton University as a student, discovered that an electric field can turn on and off molecule colors. In 1968, RCA announced the discovery of a new type of electronic display (LCD). In 1973, Sharp produced an LCD pocket calculator. The calculator was revolutionary because of its small size. In 2005 LCD television starts to gain popularity. In television, it’s the in thing. Prices are now low enough to attract consumers and many people start upgrading their old sets in preparation for high definition that will become standard in 2009. In 2006 plasma and LCD televisions get larger, less costly and more popular. They start to sell like crazy. In 2007, organic LCD displays (Oleds) are invented. They make the LCD display more flexible, less costly and available for a wider variety of applications. In 2008, LCD displays continue to gain popularity and are selling like crazy. | |||
